Study Finds Firearms Used for Defensive Use As Frequently As Criminal Use

NBC12 has the story here.  The study actually used data related to defensive firearms use that Dr. Gary Kleck published over a decade ago.  The study was commissioned by the Centers for Disease Control and completed by Institute of Medicine and National Research Council.

The study found that mass shootings in America are still relatively rare. In the past 30 years, there have been 78 shootings when a gunman killed more than four people. A final copy of the report also noted that the use of guns in self defense happens just as frequently as the criminal use of firearms.

The study found that data does not exist on the effectiveness of programs intended to reduce mass shootings and suggested more studies are needed.
