Tim Kaine Thinks Word "Nullify" is "Anti-Government Rhetoric"

Mark Levin shared this nugget on his program last night courtesy of CNN where Virginia's new junior senator Tim Kaine says that Kentucky Senator Rand Paul's use of the word "nullify" in describing what should be done by congress to respond to Obama's overreach of power with executive action.


Levin said "thank God" Kaine is just a "slip and fall lawyer" after demonstrating Kaine's knowledge of the Constitution is obviously limited. Unfortunately, before taking over Jim Webb's senate seat, Kaine was teaching law classes at the University of Richmond Law School.

There was a lot to dislike about Jim Webb, but he voted for our rights the few times he had the opportunity.  Sadly he abandon gun owners and supported an anti-rights candidate like Tim Kaine to take over his seat in the U.S. Senate.  Now we have both Kaine and Warner who will support the president's call to ban modern sporting rifles.

Don't Be Fooled: Stand for Freedom, Stand Against Tim Kaine

NRA-ILA sent out an email this morning, that included the ad below targeting Democratic Senate Candidate Tim Kaine,



Tim Kaine is once again using the same old anti-rights language to try and convince gun owners that he supports our rights.  Under the heading "Individual Rights" the Kaine web site has this:

I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, and I served as legal counsel to the effort to guarantee Virginians the right to hunt and fish.  I was responsible for common sense reforms to gun laws in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech tragedy, and I am committed to making sure felons and the dangerously mentally ill cannot improperly purchase weapons.

Kaine has always used that line about being leagel counsel to the group pushing the "Right to Hunt and Fish" amendment back in 2000.  But  every serious pro-rights activist knows the Second Amendment is not about hunting and fishing.

Tim Kaine has a record that is mixed at best.  But when when he had a chance to sign meaningful legislation that expanded the rights of gun owners, he vetoed it. So don't be fooled. Stand for Freedom, Stand Against Tim Kaine.

The NPR Web Site has an article titled  "Tale of the Tape: Ex-Governor's Duke it Out in Virginia" discussing the Virginia U.S. Senate race between former U.S. Senator and Governor George Allen and former Governor Tim Kaine.  It starts with a blurb about the race then gives a side by side comparison on the issues. Here is what they have for Tim Kaine on the issue of "Guns":

Supports gun owners rights. After the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre, as governor he advocated gun limits including preventing felons and the mentally ill from purchasing weapons.

It should be noted they did at least list under "Dumb Move" that Kaine used taxpayer funds to send buses of gun ban advocates to the 2000 "Million Mom March."

Here is a look at Kaine's record on Second Amendment legislation while governor:

Kaine is no friend to gun owners.  While he signed some legislation supported by gun owners when he was governor, he twice vetoed legislation to allow carrying concealed handguns in restaurants like Applebees and Olive Garden that serve alcohol in addition to food.  He also vetoed legislation that would have allowed a person who may lawfully possess a firearm to carry a handgun in a private motor vehicle or boat if the handgun is locked in a container or compartment.  Both pieces of legislation were later signed into law by Governor McDonnell.

Kaine also vetoed legislation that would have allowed active duty service members of the United States Armed Forces or the Virginia National Guard to purchase more than one handgun within a 30-day period, legislation that would have required localities operating compensated confiscation schemes (so-called gun buy-backs) to sell by public auction, or sealed bids, to a person licensed as a dealer, any firearms acquired through the schemes.
 
Kaine vetoed legislation that made it clear that the training required to apply for a concealed handgun permit could be completed online or other electronic format.  Fortunately, the House and Senate overrode that veto.

This year, Kaine was quoted in RVA News saying this after the passage of handgun rationing:

I am very disappointed in the General Assembly’s actions toward repeal of one of Gov. Doug Wilder’s signature achievements,” said Tim Kaine, another previous governor. Kaine is now the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate.

“I strongly urge Gov. McDonnell to veto this legislation and urge all of Virginia’s leaders in Richmond to renew their commitment to a focus on jobs and the economy,” Kaine said.
McDonnell has indicated that he would sign the repeal measure.

NPR should look beyond what a candidate puts on his website and look at his record when detailing where they stand an issue.

Washington Post Has Candidate It Can Love in Tim Kaine

The Washington Post, the media outlet most responsible for making sure Virginians did not forget the word macaca in 2006, did not fail to bring it up again in this article on Tim Kaine's announcement.  And it took them all the way to the next to last paragraph to insert a half-hearted attempted at pointing out one issue that may cause Kaine trouble:

Kaine, meanwhile, left the governor’s office in January 2010 just as the state’s budget problems were becoming clear and before Democrats took an electoral drubbing fueled by a conservative movement strongly opposed to Obama’s signature policies on health care and climate change.

Kaine and the national Democrats would much rather this race not be a referendum on Obama's first term.  They believe the expected increased turnout of a presidential election year could help them hold the seat.  But unlike Webb, Kaine is no friend of gun owners so if Kaine holds the seat for Democrats in 2012, it will be a big loss for gun owners in Virginia, and nationally.  Gun owners need to be mobilized and ready to work to make sure Kaine remains in Richmond.

More on Tim Kaine's Senate Campaign Announcement

Roll Call weighs in this morning.

The announcement came one day after President Barack Obama, who appointed the former Virginia governor to lead the DNC in 2009, announced his re-election campaign for president. Kaine is scheduled to hold a media availability Wednesday morning in Richmond to discuss the race.

Roll Call pointed out that the National Republican Senatorial Committee has been working for weeks to tie Kaine to Obama and Congressional Democrats, who suffered significant losses in the 2010 cycle.  It should be noted that Kaine did not mention President Obama or mention his DNC job in his announcement video.   Nor did he mention his support for those policies that caused the problems to which he referred now grip Washington. Expect Republicans to remind Virginia voters of those close ties in Kaine's immediate past.

And look for VSSA to remind gun owners of Kaine's past support for gun control and his vetos of important pro-rights legislation while he was governor.
