Document Dump Shows Justice Department Tried to "Spin" Away Fast and Furious Scandal

Last week, the Obama administration released documents related to the  Fast and Furious scandal after the president’s executive privilege claim from 2012 was struck down in federal court. Details are beginning to emerge, notably that the Department of Justice was more concerned about how to cover up the scandal, even pointing to the fact the NRA had asked Congress to investigate gave DOJ an opening to say this was just a political witch hunt.
“Chutzpah,” wrote Ron Weich, assistant attorney general for legislative affairs. “The NRA’s now-public involvement in this may be useful in convincing reporters that this is part of the overall effort to discredit ATF.”
As you will hear in the video below, emails included in the document dump indicate high level officials discussed how to get out in front of the information so as to control the narrative.  Townhall Editor and Fox News Contributor Katie Pavlich, who has written extensively on the subject appeared on NRANews.com earlier this week to discuss the document dump.  She said DOJ spent more than 10 months denying any knowledge of the operation, but in fact were deciding how to cover it up. The multi-year delay has been effective in running out the clock on the Obama administration.

Katie Pavlich: Obama's Pardons Prove He Isn't Serious About Guns

Earlier this week, Townhall Editor and Fox News Contributor Katie Pavlich appeared on NRANews Cam and Company to discuss President Obama's commuting the sentences of 61 federal prisoners.  These prisoners were described as a non-violent, low-level drug offenders. Pavlich says however that a closer look reveals that 12 sentences included illegal use of a firearm during the commission of a drug trafficking crime, while others were charged with felony possession and use of a firearm. She said this proves that the president isn’t serious about his executive actions on gun control as a means of stopping violent crime. The below interview originally aired on Cam & Co on April 5, 2016.

Katie Pavlich: Obama, Not the NRA, Sells Guns to Terrorists

Washington is all a twitter about resurrecting a 10 year-old proposal by the gun ban lobby to prohibit people on the government's "terrorist watch list" from purchasing firearms.  The recent terror attack in Paris has stoked this renewed interest.  Never mind that it is already almost impossible for a resident of France to own firearms.  That did not seem to stop the terrorists from carrying out their attacks.  Nor did it stop a New York newspaper from claiming the NRA wants to arm terrorists because the organization opposes using a list of names, that no one can say how it is compiled and includes the names of people who are not actually terrorists, as a means of keeping people from exercising a constitutionally protected right.

On Monday, Townhall news editor Katie Pavlich wrote an OP/ED in The Hill that says it's not the NRA that arms terrorists, but it is the Obama administration that is selling guns to terrorists. She detailed how the administration allowed thousands of guns to walk across our southern border to the drug cartels in Mexico, resulting in the killing of a U.S. Border Patrol agent and hundreds of Mexican citizents.  She appeared on NRANews' Cam and Company on Tuesday to discuss the article in more detail.

Katie Pavlich: Yes Obama Does Want to Take Your Guns

Katie Pavlich has this Op/Ed at The Hill that explains exactly what President Obama means when he says America should pass laws like Australia and Great Britain, "countries like ours, our allies" to address mass shootings.
The so-called “common-sense” and “modest” laws in Britain and Australia Obama refers to aren’t common-sense or modest at all, but rather require extreme confiscation and bans.

In 1996, the Australian government confiscated hundreds of thousands of personally owned firearms as part of their new “common-sense” gun control laws. In 1997, British citizens were forced to turn over their handguns for destruction. The prettier and more expensive versions were confiscated and placed in museums. Is this what Obama is suggesting should happen to the estimated 300 million firearms owned by American citizens? Is that what he means by “common sense,” “modest regulation” and “changing our laws?”

Of course it is.
Pavlich is not the only commentator to point out what Obama really means when he constantly points to those two countries as examples of great gun laws.  Last week Charles C. W. Cooke wrote over on National Review Online:
This is remarkable. Customarily, Democratic politicians react to mass shootings by calling for pointless around-the-edges reforms: “universal” background checks, hard limits on the size of commercially available magazines, rules that determine how certain rifles may look, etc. In fact, since 2012 Obama has tended to take this approach himself. Now, however, the president is openly praising two countries that confiscated — yes, confiscated — firearms. That matters — and a great deal.

Why? Well, because the president’s defenders like to mock those among his critics who argue that he wants to “take their guns away.” As of today, they will no longer be able to do so.

This is not “hysteria” or “a matter of opinion.” This is a cold, hard fact. If you praise Great Britain or Australia, you are praising confiscation. Before yesterday, Obama has always alluded to Australia in passing. Now he is praising it directly and adding Great Britain into the mix. That’s a significant change.
And Jonah Goldberg, also at National Review:
One can forgive the average American, not to mention the typical White House correspondent, for not knowing how Britain and Australia dealt with gun violence. But Obama knows. Both countries employed massive gun-confiscation programs (programs that depend on national gun registries so the government can find them). The British in effect banned handguns. Obama may consider that a reasonable, common-sense approach, but he knows full well that millions of Americans don’t.
Freed from having to run for re-election, Obama is making his true colors on guns known, yet the average American probably doesn't understand what he is pushing.  As long as he has the mainstream media to cover for him, most Americans probably won't know what Obama means when he points to Great Britain and Australia as perfect examples of gun control.

Update: On Tuesday, Pavlich spoke with NRANews' Cam Edwards about her article in The Hill.

Everytown Making Things Up on Background Checks

Bloomberg's Everytown for Gun Safety has gone on the attack against Cabela's, the retailer where the racist murderer who shot nine people in a Charleston Church last month bought his gun.  Last Friday, the FBI admitted it was it's error that allowed the sale to be completed.  So, you might ask, why is Everytown going after Cabela's.  Because of what they are now calling and "NRA backed loophole in the law" that allows someone to take possession of their firearm is the retailer has not received a NICS rejection of the transaction within three days.   This from Guns.com:
This has former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety and the affiliated Moms Demand Action pushing a large national firearms retailer to close what they are calling, “The Charleston Loophole.”

Both groups are mounting a social media campaign asking the Nebraska-based Cabela’s to halt allowing guns to transfer with a delay status unresolved after the three day period. With some 60 stores and a large direct marketing arm, Cabela’s had more than $3 billion in revenue in 2014.

“Retailers have the right — and responsibility — to delay a gun sale until a background check is completed,” reads a post from Everytown. “But Cabela’s, one of the largest gun retailers in the country, will sell to anyone after three business days, even without a completed background check.”
Here are the facts about background checks:
When a delay response is received, this indicates that information supplied on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Form 4473 has been matched with information contained in the National Crime Information Center, the Interstate Identification Index, and/or the NICS Index. Complete information is not always available and a further review of these records is necessary. The NICS exhausts all efforts to retrieve current record information by contacting law enforcement agencies, i.e., local, state, federal, courts, etc. The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993 allows three business days to obtain this information prior to the transfer of the firearm. The Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) is not prohibited from transferring the firearm after three business days have passed; however, the FFL is not required to transfer the firearm.
But facts never get in the way of Bloomberg's minions when it comes to exploiting a tragedy.  Katie Pavlich wrote about this at Townhall.com and spoke about the article and Everytown's false claims on NRANews.com.

Gun Free Zone Documentary Debuts April 1

The topic of “gun-free zones” and campus carry is facing the glare of the national spotlight with lawmakers in 10 states promoting bills to permit licensed carriers who are 21 or older to bring their firearms on college campuses. Safety/security (sexual assault and mass shootings) and constitutional-rights concerns are driving the discussion.  So it is timely that the Outdoor Channel's Safe Haven Documentary hosted by Fox News contributor and Townhall news editor Katie Pavlich debut's April 1.
According to the Outdoor Channel media release:
"Safe Haven" takes a critical look at the history of gun-free zones in the United States and their effect on crime prevention through a series of interviews with law enforcement, industry experts and survivors, among others. The documentary explores how effective, or perhaps ineffective, these gun-free measures have been and offers possible solutions that would better protects schools, businesses and the public at large.
The program airs at 4:30 ET on April 1.

ATF Director First Casualty of Ammo Ban Fiasco

The Hill reports that ATF Director B. Todd Jones is resigning following the fiasco that led to the agency temporarily pulling the "green tip" ammo ban proposal:
Jones, who in July 2013 became the first ATF director to be confirmed by the Senate, is departing shortly after the agency dropped a controversial attempt to ban certain armor-piercing bullets used in AR-15 rifles.

The episode was the latest in a series of flaps that has put the Obama administration's ATF at odds with many congressional Republicans. In recent weeks, GOP lawmakers have introduced legislation seeking to tamp down on the agency's authority — and to abolish the ATF altogether.

Attorney General Eric Holder lauded Jones for his service and "groundbreaking" law enforcement initiatives, including an effort to strengthen ballistic imaging technology that recently played a critical role in the investigation of the shooting of two police officers.
Townhall's Katie Pavlich had a great idea on the subject when she posted this comment on Twitter:

ATF Temporarily Shelves Ammo Ban Proposal

Fox News and The Hill are reporting that the ATF has decided to shelve the controversial proposed ban on green tip ammunition commonly used in AR-15 rifles. From The Hill:
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) said it will not seek to issue a final framework for the rule “at this time” after receiving more than 80,000 comments on the proposal, the “vast majority” of which were negative.

"You spoke, we listened," the ATF tweeted.
This comes on the heels of Katie Pavlich's article over the weekend pointing out that the new regulations released showing the green tip ammo was already removed from the list of exempted ammunition.  ATF then called that a "publishing error."

While this is good news for now, the ATF release says that the proposal deserves "further study," meaning it may be back at some point in the future.

Goodlatte Wants Answers from ATF on Ammo Ban Proposal

Katie Pavlich reports that Virginia 6th District Congressman, and House Judiciary Chairman, Bob Goodlatte wants answers from ATF Director B. Todd Jones on the agency's proposal to ban on commonly used AR-15 ammunition.
Last week on behalf of the bipartisan House Judiciary Committee, Chairman Bob Goodlatte sent a letter to ATF Director B. Todd Jones demanding answers about a pending ban on commonly used AR-15 ammunition, better known as 5.56 M855 ball ammunition. ATF recently proposed the ban and broadly cited law enforcement officer safety as its justification, saying the ammunition is "armor piercing," but provided zero evidence to back up their endangerment claim.
As has been pointed out by numerous sources from gun bloggers to the NRA, this proposal is nothing short of rendering the nation's best selling rifle useless. Obama can't get legislation to ban modern sporting rifles so he is doing the next best thing, making sure they can't be used due to lack of ammunition.

Rep. Goodlatte spoke with Fox News about this issue late last week.
If you live in the 6th Congressional District, please take a moment to thank Congressman Goodlatte for standing up for your rights.  Also, if you have not already done so, please comment on the proposal before March 16th by contacting ATF at APAComments@atf.gov, or by fax at (202) 648-9741. Comments can also be sent through the mail to:
  • Denise Brown, Mailstop 6N-602, Office of Regulatory Affairs, Enforcement Programs and Services, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, 99 New York Avenue, NE, Washington, DC 20226: ATTN: AP Ammo Comments.
Update: AmericanRifleman.org reports this morning that the Fraternal Order of Police opposes the proposed ban.
