Thrasher, 19, beat silver medalist Du Li of China in the final round with a total of 208.0, setting an Olympic record in the finals. Du finished with 207.0.The final shots of the medal round for NBC Sports:
Yi Siling of China took bronze as the first medals in Rio were awarded.
Thrasher wasn't one of the favorites to win a medal coming into the Olympics.

Thrasher Wins First Gold Medal of 2016 Olympic Games
Virginian Ginny Thrasher set an Olympic record and upset Chinese shooter Du Li to take home the first Gold Medal awarded in the 2016 Olympic Games. From USA Today:

Thrasher is a product of the air rifle program at West Springfield High School in Fairfax County and Arlington-Fairfax IWLA (a VSSA affiliated club). She will compete again on August 11 in three position.
