Do you back up your endorsements with anything? Campaign contributions, GOTV mailings, etc.?

VSSA does not have a PAC so we do not make campaign contributions. We do inform our members through our email list and our member publication and encourage them to volunteer to help the campaigns in addition to voting for the endorsed candidates.

Do your friends in the legislature ever ask for donations and have you ever been told by an elected official who has been less than supportive of your issues something along the lines of: I agree with what you're saying, but I'm not going to help you because you haven't helped with my election campaign?

To my recollection VSSA has only received an overt request for donations a couple of times and they have come from very anti-gun legislators. They likely pulled a list of registered lobbying organizations from the Secretary of the Commonwealth and sent the invitation because both were to golf fundraising events.

Golf outings are popular fundraisers. Were any of the invitations targeted at you or another VSSA director personally or were they just sent to the VSSA maildrop?

They were addressed to VSSA to my attention as VSSA President since I am the one that signs our lobbyist registration form.

So, aside from giving a bad grade, you cannot take any direct action against someone who does not go along with your legislative agenda?

I would consider encouraging our membership not to vote for them to be direct action. We also send legislative alerts to our membership during the General Assembly session urging them to contact their legislators to support good bills and to oppose bad bills.
