As Deeds surged, McAuliffe and Moran were caught napping; they hadn’t presented the case against Deeds at any point during the campaign. It is a good read.
In the final days, they tried to hit Deeds for his record against gun control, but the attacks rang hollow because no one had been talking about gun control as a top issue. Deeds won in a rout.

Lessons from Virginia Primary
Josh Goodman has a good article on today's CQ Politics web page. He basically talks about how Deeds ran a very disciplined campaign and how when Deeds did start showing some momentum, McAuliffe and Moran were caught napping. This quote is especially insightful because it showed how deparate the other campaigns were when trying to mount a last minute attack.
