Attorney General Herring Tells Lee County Can't Use Armed Staff To Protect Students

Earlier this week, Attorney General Mark Herring released an opinion that the law does not allow Lee County to use armed staff as school security.  The Times Dispatch has the story here.

Herring instructed the Department of Criminal Justice Services that it cannot register teachers as special conservators of the peace (SCOPS) for the purposes of arming them on school grounds.

“Virginia law expressly limits who may possess firearms on school grounds for safety purposes, and the General Assembly declined to enact bills presented every year from 2013 through 2017 to extend this authority to school teachers and administrators,” Herring concluded.
