2009 Election

The end of the General Assembly in an election year also brings with it announcements of retirement from the legislature. This year was no different. So far five members of the House of Delegates have announced they will not run for another term. Two of those who have announced, Delegate Jeff Frederick (Prince William) and Delegate William Fralin (Roanoke), have been friends of gun owners and we will have to work hard to replace them with legislators that respect the Constitution and our rights. Another retiring delegate, Frank Hargrove (Hanover) was a supporter of our rights with the exception of repealing the "restaurant ban," which he voted against in 2003, last year, and this year. Gun owners in Hanover need to get involved in the nominating process to help make sure we have a strong advocate for all of our rights to replace Delegate Hargrove.

In the 25th House District, another friend of gun owners, Delegate Steve Landes (Weyers Cave), will face opposition for the first time in more than a decade. Landes deserves the support of gun owners in his district and I will have information in the near future on how to help him in his re-election bid.

I wish that you had given me the opportunity to express my position on guns before you stero-typed me. I am NOT a liberal democrat. Quite the contrary, I am a card carrying member of the NRA and a proud owner of several firearms. In addition to several rifles and handguns, I own a mac-11 and an AR-15 that I built from parts. If the democrats think that I will tow the party line on this issue, then they will be sadly disappointed. I would be happy to go target shooting, or to a gun show, with you anytime.

Respectfully,
Greg Marrow
candidate, House of Delegates

Mr. Marrow, I don't recall sterotyping you. I did not mention you by name nor did I characterize your position on the right to keep and bear arms as the article to which I linked about did not mentioned it. I simply posted that Delegate Landes has been a friend to gun owners while he has been in the General Assembly and deserves their support.

You are welcome to comment on any future post about your race as well as submit an article on your candidacy to the VSSA members publication.

Fair enough. I've run into lots of folks who have angrily assumed that I was anti-gun just because I'm running as a Dem. I errantly took your post to imply the same. I have no desire to allow the government to weaken the 2nd amendment. Thanks for letting me blog on your site. Keep up the good work.

Respectfully,
Greg Marrow

I understand. VSSA is non-partisan. Like at the national level, many of the pro-rights candidates tend to be in one party more than the other (in Virginia they tend to be south of the Occaquan River either way), but we have friends on both side of the aisle and that situation is best for gun owners.

VSSA has been in the uncomfortable position of having a member running for office in the past but because the incumbent had a very good voting record on our issue, we endorsed the incumbent. Fortunately the member understood the endorsement process.
